Early mobility training is a rehabilitation strategy designed to help patients quickly start movement activities—such as sitting, standing, or walking—after surgery, illness, or hospitalisation. In post-operative environments and intensive care units (ICUs), where protracted immobility can cause muscular atrophy, blood clots, pressure ulcers, and respiratory problems, this proactive intervention is especially important. Early mobility seeks to restore function, avoid problems, and hasten recovery.
Working together, trained medical staff—including nurses and physical therapists—assess a patient's degree of mobility and adjust activities. Early exercises, depending on the patient's health, can be range-of-motion exercises, assisted transfers, or ambulation with support. Especially in older persons, this approach not only increases physical recovery but also lowers the risk of cognitive decline and depression.
Studies of early mobility program participants reveal shorter hospital stays, reduced rates of hospitalization, and generally better outcomes. Important elements also are family involvement and patient education, which inspire consistency in the recovery process.
Early mobility training should be included in patient treatment to greatly improve quality of life and encourage independence, preparing the ground for a better return to everyday activities.
