Plasma Cell Disorders

Plasma cell disorders are a group of conditions in which plasma cells, specialized white blood cells responsible for producing antibodies, grow or function abnormally. These disorders can range from relatively harmless conditions to serious blood cancers. Common examples include monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), solitary plasmacytoma, and multiple myeloma.

In healthy individuals, plasma cells help the immune system fight infections by producing antibodies. In plasma cell disorders, abnormal plasma cells may produce excessive amounts of a single abnormal protein called a monoclonal protein or M protein. Its presence can interfere with normal blood-cell production and organ function.

Symptoms vary according to the specific disorder and may include persistent bone pain, weakness, frequent infections, anemia, unexplained weight loss, or kidney problems. Some individuals have no symptoms and are diagnosed through routine blood or urine testing.

Diagnosis may involve blood tests, urine analysis, bone marrow examination, imaging studies, and specialized protein testing. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the condition and may include monitoring, targeted medicines, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or stem-cell transplantation.

Early diagnosis and appropriate monitoring are important for managing disease progression, preventing complications, and supporting long-term health outcomes.
