Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML)

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia(AML) is a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects immature cells responsible for developing into healthy blood cells. In AML, abnormal myeloid cells multiply rapidly and interfere with normal blood cell production, leading to reduced red blood cells, platelets, and healthy white blood cells.

Symptoms may develop quickly and can include persistent fatigue, weakness, pale skin, frequent infections, fever, easy bruising, nosebleeds, and prolonged bleeding. Some people may experience bone or joint discomfort, weight loss, or loss of appetite. Because AML can progress rapidly, early medical assessment is important when unexplained symptoms persist.

Diagnosis commonly involves a complete blood count, peripheral blood examination, and bone marrow aspiration or biopsy. Additional flow cytometry, chromosome studies, and molecular tests help identify the specific AML subtype and guide treatment decisions.

Treatment depends on the patient's age, general health, AML subtype, and genetic findings. It may include intensive chemotherapy, targeted medicines, lower-intensity therapies, or stem cell transplantation. Supportive care, including transfusions and infection management, may also be necessary.

With advances in targeted therapies and personalised treatment, outcomes for AML continue to improve. Close monitoring is essential during treatment and remission to detect relapse or complications early.
