Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes

Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes are a group of disorders in which the bone marrow cannot produce enough healthy blood cells. Since bone marrow is responsible for making red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, its failure can affect several important body functions. Common conditions include aplastic anaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and certain inherited marrow failure disorders.

Reduced red blood cell production may cause anaemia, leading to persistent tiredness, weakness, breathlessness, and pale skin. Low white blood cell levels can weaken the body's ability to fight infections, while decreased platelets may result in easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, or prolonged bleeding. Some patients may experience more than one of these problems simultaneously.

Diagnosis usually involves a complete blood count, peripheral blood examination, and bone marrow aspiration or biopsy. Additional genetic, immunological, or molecular tests may help identify the underlying cause.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of marrow failure and may include blood transfusions, medicines that stimulate blood cell production, immunosuppressive therapy, targeted treatment, or stem cell transplantation. Regular monitoring is important to detect complications early. Early diagnosis and specialist care can improve blood counts, reduce complications, and support better long-term health outcomes.
