Bone Marrow Disorders

Bone marrow disorders are conditions that interfere with the normal production and development of blood cells inside the bone marrow. Since the marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, abnormalities can significantly affect overall health and immunity.

These disorders may develop because of genetic changes, immune system problems, infections, nutritional deficiencies, medications, or certain cancers. Common examples include aplastic anaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, myelofibrosis, and leukaemia. Some disorders cause the bone marrow to produce too few healthy blood cells, while others result in excessive or abnormal cell production.

Individuals may experience persistent tiredness, pale skin, frequent infections, unexplained bruising, prolonged bleeding, fever, or shortness of breath. In some cases, bone pain, enlarged organs, or unexplained weight loss may also occur.

Diagnosis generally involves a complete blood count, blood examination, and specialised bone marrow aspiration or biopsy. Additional genetic, molecular, or imaging tests may help determine the underlying cause.

Treatment depends on the specific disorder and may include medicines, nutritional support, blood transfusions, targeted therapies, chemotherapy, immunosuppressive treatment, or stem cell transplantation. Early diagnosis and regular monitoring can help manage complications and improve outcomes.
