Basophilia

Basophilia is a condition characterised by an increased number of basophils in the bloodstream. Basophils are a type of white blood cell that plays an important role in immune responses, particularly allergic reactions and inflammation. They release substances such as histamine and other inflammatory mediators that help the body respond to certain triggers.

Basophilia may occur temporarily during allergic reactions, infections, or inflammatory conditions. It can also be associated with chronic inflammatory disorders, endocrine abnormalities, and some autoimmune diseases. Persistent or marked basophilia may sometimes indicate an underlying bone marrow disorder, including myeloproliferative neoplasms such as chronic myeloid leukaemia.

Many people with mild basophilia do not experience symptoms directly related to the increased basophil count. Symptoms, when present, usually depend on the underlying cause and may include itching, skin rashes, fatigue, fever, swelling, or other signs of inflammation.

Basophilia is generally identified through a complete blood count with differential analysis. Further investigations may be recommended when the elevation is persistent or unexplained. Treatment focuses primarily on addressing the underlying condition rather than basophilia itself. Depending on the cause, management may involve treating infections, controlling allergies or inflammation, or evaluating suspected blood disorders. Regular medical assessment is important when basophilia persists or occurs alongside other abnormal blood counts.
