Neutrophilia

Neutrophilia is a condition in which the number of neutrophils, a major type of white blood cell, becomes higher than the normal range. Neutrophils are essential components of the immune system and play a vital role in protecting the body against infections and inflammation. Neutrophilia may develop as a normal response to acute infection, physical stress, tissue injury, or certain medications.
Common causes include bacterial infections, inflammatory disorders, trauma, burns, strenuous exercise, smoking, and corticosteroid use. In some cases, persistent neutrophilia may be associated with bone marrow disorders or certain blood cancers. The condition itself may not produce specific symptoms; instead, symptoms usually relate to its underlying cause. Fever, fatigue, pain, swelling, or other signs of infection may be present.

Diagnosis generally involves a complete blood count (CBC) with differential to measure neutrophil levels. Additional investigations may be recommended when the elevation is significant, persistent, or unexplained. Treatment focuses primarily on identifying and managing the underlying condition rather than lowering the neutrophil count directly.
