White Blood Cell Disorders

White Blood Cell Disorders are conditions that affect the number, function, development, or activity of white blood cells, which are essential components of the immune system. These disorders can result in either excessive or insufficient production of specific white blood cell types, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils.

Common disorders include leukopenia, neutropenia, lymphocytosis, eosinophilia, monocytosis, and leukocytosis. Some conditions develop because of infections, nutritional deficiencies, medications, autoimmune diseases, bone marrow problems, or genetic abnormalities. Others, such as leukaemia and certain myeloproliferative disorders, arise from abnormal growth of blood-forming cells.

Symptoms vary according to the underlying disorder. Frequent or persistent infections may occur when white blood cell numbers or function are reduced, while fever, inflammation, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or enlarged lymph nodes may accompany certain abnormal proliferative conditions.

Diagnosis usually involves a complete blood count with differential, peripheral blood examination, and additional investigations when necessary. Bone marrow examination, immunological tests, genetic studies, or imaging may help identify the specific cause.

Treatment depends on the underlying condition and may involve antibiotics, nutritional supplementation, immune-modulating medicines, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or supportive care. Early evaluation is important for identifying serious blood or bone marrow disorders and managing complications effectively.
