Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB)

Mini gastric bypass (MGB), also called single-anastomosis or omega-loop gastric bypass, is a laparoscopic weight-loss surgery that creates a long, narrow gastric pouch and connects it to a loop of small intestine to reduce calorie absorption and restrict intake. The procedure combines restrictive and malabsorptive elements: the smaller stomach limits portion size while the intestinal bypass reduces calorie and nutrient uptake, producing substantial and sustained weight loss for many patients. Compared with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, MGB is usually shorter, technically simpler, requires a single gastrojejunostomy, and often involves shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.

Common benefits include rapid improvement in obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and hypertension. However, risks include nutrient and vitamin deficiencies, bile reflux gastritis in some patients, dumping syndrome, and potential surgical complications like leaks or ulcers; lifelong follow-up and supplementation are essential. Candidate selection requires multidisciplinary assessment—medical evaluation, nutritional counselling, and psychological screening—to optimize outcomes and reduce complications.
