Sarcopenic Obesity

Sarcopenic Obesity is a complex health condition characterized by the coexistence of excess body fat and reduced skeletal muscle mass and strength. It combines two significant disorders—obesity and sarcopenia—resulting in a higher risk of physical disability, metabolic complications, and poor overall health outcomes. This condition is most commonly seen in older adults but can also affect younger individuals with sedentary lifestyles, chronic illnesses, or poor nutritional habits.

The development of sarcopenic obesity is influenced by aging, hormonal changes, physical inactivity, chronic inflammation, inadequate protein intake, and certain medical conditions. As muscle mass declines and body fat increases, individuals may experience weakness, reduced mobility, fatigue, balance problems, and difficulty performing daily activities. Despite appearing overweight or obese, affected individuals often have significantly impaired muscle function.

Sarcopenic obesity is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, falls, fractures, and reduced quality of life. Diagnosis typically involves assessing body composition, muscle strength, physical performance, and metabolic health through specialized tests and clinical evaluation.

Treatment focuses on reducing excess fat while preserving or increasing muscle mass. Strategies include resistance training, regular physical activity, protein-rich nutrition, weight management programs, and treatment of underlying medical conditions. Early identification and intervention can improve strength, mobility, metabolic health, and long-term well-being.
