Weight Management & Body Composition Disorders

Weight Management & Body Composition Disorders are a category of disorders that affect a person’s ability to maintain a healthy body weight and the balance of fat, muscle, bone, and water in the body. They are generally due to a mix of genetic, hormonal, metabolic, behavioural, and environmental variables.
The common conditions in this group are obesity, overweight, underweight, sarcopenia, cachexia, metabolic obesity, and weight rebound after major weight reduction or bariatric surgery. Symptoms of this could be trouble losing or gaining weight, weariness, decreased physical performance, a change in body shape, and a higher risk of chronic diseases.

Poor body composition can severely affect overall health by raising the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, joint diseases, and lower quality of life. Nutritional deficits, endocrine issues, drugs, or chronic diseases can cause some problems.

The diagnosis is usually based on the body mass index (BMI), body fat analysis, waist circumference measures, laboratory studies, and clinical assessment. Treatment is directed at correcting the underlying cause with customised nutrition regimens, regular physical exercise, behavioural adjustment, medical management and continuing monitoring. Early intervention and long-term lifestyle adjustments are key to achieving healthy weight management and improving body composition for better overall health and well-being.
