Stricture Formation

Stricture formation refers to the development of an abnormal narrowing within a tubular structure of the body, such as the esophagus, intestines, bile ducts, urethra, or blood vessels. This condition commonly occurs when healing tissues produce excessive scar tissue following injury, surgery, infection, chronic inflammation, or radiation therapy. As scar tissue contracts over time, the affected passage becomes progressively narrower, restricting the normal flow of substances through it.

The symptoms of a stricture depend on its location. Esophageal strictures may cause difficulty swallowing and discomfort while eating, whereas intestinal strictures can lead to abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and bowel obstruction. Urethral strictures often result in reduced urine flow, urinary retention, or recurrent infections. In many cases, symptoms gradually worsen as the narrowing becomes more severe.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies, endoscopic examinations, or specialized tests designed to assess the extent and location of the narrowing. Treatment options vary according to the severity and underlying cause of the stricture. Common approaches include balloon dilation, endoscopic procedures, stent placement, medications to reduce inflammation, or surgical reconstruction in more advanced cases.

Early detection and appropriate management are important for preventing complications and restoring normal function. Regular follow-up care helps monitor progression and reduce the risk of recurrence after treatment.
