Hip Osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition characterized by the gradual breakdown of cartilage that cushions the hip joint. As the cartilage wears away, the bones rub against each other, causing pain, inflammation, stiffness, and reduced joint function. It most commonly affects older adults but may also develop due to obesity, previous hip injuries, congenital hip abnormalities, repetitive joint stress, or genetic predisposition.

The condition usually progresses slowly, with symptoms becoming more noticeable over time. Common signs include persistent pain in the hip, groin, buttock, or thigh, morning stiffness, reduced flexibility, clicking or grinding sensations, and difficulty performing activities such as walking, bending, climbing stairs, or standing for extended periods. As the disease advances, mobility may become increasingly restricted.

Diagnosis involves a physical examination, evaluation of symptoms, and imaging tests such as X-rays or MRI scans to determine the extent of cartilage loss and joint damage. Treatment aims to relieve pain, improve mobility, and maintain joint function. Management may include weight reduction, low-impact exercises, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, assistive devices, and lifestyle modifications. In severe cases, total hip replacement surgery may be recommended.

Early diagnosis, regular physical activity, muscle strengthening, and maintaining a healthy weight can help slow progression, reduce discomfort, and improve long-term joint health and overall quality of life.
