Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder in which the upper airway repeatedly becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep. These interruptions reduce or stop airflow despite ongoing breathing efforts, causing frequent awakenings that often go unnoticed. As a result, sleep quality declines, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and reduced productivity.

The most common risk factors include obesity, enlarged tonsils, a thick neck circumference, advancing age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and certain anatomical features that narrow the airway. Loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning headaches, dry mouth, and restless sleep are typical symptoms.

If left untreated, OSA can significantly increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, irregular heart rhythms, and metabolic disorders. Diagnosis usually involves a sleep study, known as polysomnography, or home sleep apnea testing, which measures breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and sleep stages.

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and may include weight reduction, lifestyle modifications, avoiding alcohol before bedtime, positional therapy, oral appliances, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. In selected cases, surgery may be recommended to remove airway obstructions. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment greatly improve sleep quality, overall health, and long-term cardiovascular outcomes.
