Obesity-Related Cardiomyopathy

Obesity-related cardiomyopathy is a cardiovascular condition in which excessive body weight directly affects the structure and function of the heart muscle. Long-term obesity increases the workload on the heart, forcing it to pump more blood to meet the body's metabolic demands. Over time, this added strain can cause enlargement and thickening of the heart chambers, particularly the left ventricle, resulting in impaired cardiac function.

The condition develops through multiple mechanisms, including chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and abnormal fat accumulation around and within the heart tissue. These changes can weaken the heart muscle, reduce its ability to pump blood efficiently, and increase the risk of developing heart failure. Individuals with obesity-related cardiomyopathy may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, swelling in the legs, and irregular heartbeats.

Risk factors include severe obesity, sedentary lifestyle, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, and metabolic syndrome. Early diagnosis is important and may involve echocardiography, electrocardiography, cardiac MRI, and blood tests. Treatment focuses on weight reduction, healthy dietary changes, regular physical activity, management of associated conditions, and medications to improve heart function. Timely intervention can significantly improve symptoms, enhance quality of life, and reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular complications.
