Industrial Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Industrial noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most prevalent occupational diseases globally, affecting millions of workers in manufacturing, mining, construction, and metalworking industries. This permanent sensorineural hearing loss results from prolonged exposure to hazardous noise levels at or above the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit of 85 A-weighted decibels (dBA) averaged over an eight-hour workday.

The mechanism involves mechanical and metabolic damage to cochlear hair cells in the inner ear. Sounds exceeding 80 dB create intense vibrations that destroy these delicate sensory cells, which cannot regenerate. Early symptoms include difficulty hearing conversations in background noise, perceived mumbling, frequent requests for repetition, and tinnitus (ringing in ears).

High-risk occupations include airline ground maintenance, construction workers, farmers, machinery operators, and military personnel exposed to aircraft or combat noise. The hearing loss typically begins at higher frequencies (3,000–6,000 Hz) and progressively worsens with continued exposure.

Prevention is nearly always possible through engineering controls, administrative measures, and personal protective equipment. Workers should wear properly fitted earplugs or earmuffs, limit exposure time, take breaks from noisy areas, and undergo regular hearing conservation programs. Once damage occurs, it remains irreversible, making early prevention critical for preserving auditory function throughout working life.
