Temporal Bone Fracture

A temporal bone fracture is a serious injury involving the temporal bone, a complex skull bone that surrounds and protects important structures of the ear. These fractures usually occur due to significant head trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, or physical assaults. Because the temporal bone houses the hearing and balance organs, damage can result in hearing loss, dizziness, tinnitus, facial nerve weakness, and ear bleeding.

Symptoms vary depending on the severity and location of the fracture. Patients may experience ear pain, fluid leakage from the ear, vertigo, ringing in the ears, or sudden changes in hearing. In some cases, injury to the facial nerve can lead to weakness or paralysis of facial muscles on the affected side. Fractures may also increase the risk of infections, including meningitis, if cerebrospinal fluid leaks through the ear.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough physical examination and high-resolution CT imaging of the temporal bone. Audiological evaluations help determine the extent of hearing impairment. Treatment depends on the type of fracture and associated complications. Mild cases may heal with observation and supportive care, while severe injuries may require surgery to repair damaged structures or address facial nerve involvement.

Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to prevent long-term complications and preserve hearing and balance function.
