Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD)

Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) is a hearing condition in which sound enters the inner ear normally, but the transmission of auditory signals from the cochlea to the brain is disrupted. Unlike typical sensorineural hearing loss, the outer hair cells of the inner ear often function properly, while the auditory nerve or inner hair cells fail to send clear and synchronized signals. As a result, individuals may hear sounds but struggle to understand speech, particularly in noisy environments.

ANSD can affect people of all ages, including newborns, children, and adults. Common causes include premature birth, neonatal jaundice, genetic mutations, neurological disorders, oxygen deprivation at birth, and certain infections. Symptoms vary widely and may range from mild communication difficulties to significant hearing impairment.

Diagnosis typically involves specialized hearing assessments, including otoacoustic emissions (OAE), auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing, and speech perception evaluations. Because hearing thresholds may fluctuate, regular monitoring is often necessary.

Treatment depends on the severity of the disorder and individual communication needs. Options may include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, speech and language therapy, auditory training, or cochlear implants in selected cases. Early identification and intervention are crucial for supporting language development, communication skills, educational progress, and overall quality of life.
