Aortic Dissection is
a serious and potentially fatal cardiovascular emergency that occurs
when a tear develops in the inner lining of the aorta, the body’s main artery.
This tear allows blood to flow between the layers of the aortic wall, forcing
them apart and creating a false channel. If untreated, it can lead to rupture,
organ damage, stroke, or sudden death.
The condition often presents
with sudden, severe chest or upper back pain, commonly described as tearing
or ripping. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, fainting,
weak pulse, or signs of stroke. Risk factors include long-standing high
blood pressure, connective tissue disorders such as Marfan Syndrome,
atherosclerosis, trauma, and a family history of aortic disease.
Diagnosis usually involves urgent imaging tests such as CT Angiography, MRI, or echocardiography to confirm the tear and determine its extent. Treatment depends on the type and location of the dissection. Some cases require emergency surgery, while others may be managed with medications to lower blood pressure and reduce stress on the aorta. Early intervention greatly improves survival and long-term outcomes.
