Laryngeal cancer develops in the laryngeal tissues responsible for respiration, deglutition, and phonation. It accounts for approximately one-third of head and neck malignancies, with squamous cell carcinoma being the predominant type. There are three parts to the disease: supraglottic, glottic, and subglottic. Each part has its own stage.
Things that make you more likely to get sick
Heavy smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and being around things like asbestos or metal fumes are all big concerns. Men over 55 are more likely to get it, but the links to HPV are still not obvious. There were 177,000 cases around the world in 2018, and 94,800 people died.
Signs and Symptoms
If you have hoarseness that lasts more than two weeks, it could be early glottic cancer. If you have supraglottic cancer, you might have a painful throat, an earache, or a lump in your neck. Laryngoscopy, biopsies, and imaging tests like CT scans are all used to make a diagnosis. It is difficult to find subglottic tumours early because they are infrequent.
Choices for Treatment
Radiation or surgery is the best way to maintain voice function in the early stages of treatment. Advanced cases combine chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and partial or whole laryngectomy. In the US, the average five-year survival rate is 60%. Strategies that protect the larynx help many people get better results.
