Prostate cancer is a malignant neoplasm originating in the prostate gland, an organ situated under the bladder responsible for producing a portion of seminal fluid. One of the most frequent malignancies in men, the risk goes up with age, family history, specific genetic abnormalities like BRCA1/BRCA2, and higher lifetime exposure to androgens like testosterone. Early prostate cancer usually doesn't create any symptoms. This is why PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams are used to find the disease at a stage where it is easier to treat.
When symptoms appear, they may include a weak or interrupted urine stream, difficulty starting urination, frequent nighttime urination, discomfort or burning during urination, blood in the urine or semen, and painful ejaculation. Advanced disease can spread to bones and lymph nodes, which can cause pain in the bones, back, or hips; weight loss; weariness; and weakness in the legs. Depending on the stage, management can include active surveillance for low-risk tumours, surgery, radiation, androgen-deprivation therapy, chemotherapy, and newer targeted or immunotherapy drugs to slow growth and extend survival.
