Glomerulonephritis (GN) is a collection of kidney diseases that cause inflammation and damage to the glomeruli, which are the tiny blood-filtering structures in the kidneys. This inflammation makes it harder for the kidneys to obtain rid of waste and extra fluids, which can cause symptoms like blood or protein in the urine, foamy pee, swelling (oedema) around the eyes and ankles, high blood pressure, tiredness, and less urine production. GN can show up suddenly or over time, and it can be caused by infections, autoimmune illnesses like lupus, or genetic abnormalities.
The immune system often mistakenly attacks the glomeruli, which leads to scarring and loss of kidney function. If left untreated, long-term inflammation can cause chronic kidney disease or renal failure. To find out what caused the damage and how severe it is, doctors may do a urinalysis, blood tests, renal imaging, and sometimes a biopsy.
Doctors use corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and blood pressure-lowering drugs to treat the disease by addressing the root cause and managing inflammation. With prompt treatment, many people can stop their kidneys from failing and keep them healthy for a long period.
