Early Childhood Caries (ECC), commonly referred to as Nursing Bottle Caries, is a serious dental condition that significantly impacts babies and toddlers. It happens when a child's teeth are often exposed to sugary drinks such as milk, formula, fruit juices, or sweetened drinks, especially around sleep or nap time. The sugar in these drinks feeds harmful bacteria in the mouth, which makes acids that slowly wear away the enamel on the teeth.
The upper front teeth are usually the most affected, but if the problem isn't treated, other teeth might also be damaged. White patches, brown spots, or holes that you can see are all signs. Over time, tooth decay can cause pain, illness, trouble chewing, and even losing primary teeth too soon, which can affect speech and the alignment of permanent teeth.
Parents should not let their kids sleep with a bottle, clean their gums after feeding, and start brushing their teeth as soon as the first one comes in. Regular dental checks starting at age one can also help find early indicators of deterioration. To keep your child's smile safe from nursing bottle caries, you need to encourage proper dental hygiene and cut down on sugary drinks.
