Tooth Abscess

Causes, symptoms, and treatment of tooth abscess

An abscess on a tooth is a painful infection that occurs at the tooth's root or between the tooth and the gums. It usually happens when a tooth is very decayed, has gum disease, or has a crack that lets bacteria in. The infection makes pus build up, which produces a lot of pain, swelling, and sometimes a fever or a terrible taste in the mouth.

Common signs of the infection include a painful toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, swollen lymph nodes, facial swelling, and difficulty chewing. If untreated, the illness can spread to other body parts, which is very dangerous.
Draining the abscess and getting rid of the infection are part of the treatment. Depending on how bad the problem is, dentists may give you antibiotics and suggest root canal therapy or tooth extraction. Getting dental care right away is important for relief and to avoid problems.

Taking care of your teeth, going to the dentist regularly, and getting cavities treated early can all help keep abscesses from happening. Giving up smoking and eating less sugary foods are also good for your oral health.
