Starting in the basal cells of the lowest layer of the epidermis, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most often occurring form of skin cancer. It is mostly brought on by extended sun or tanning bed UV radiation. Though it hardly spreads (metastasises) to other areas of the body, if ignored, BCC can develop locally and seriously damage tissues.
Usually presenting as a pearly or waxy lump, a flat flesh-coloured lesion, or a non-healing sore, BCC usually looks like it. It usually starts on sun-exposed areas, including the arms, neck, ears, and face. Early identification is crucial to avoid disfigurement and more difficult treatments, even if BCC grows slowly.
A skin biopsy proves diagnosis. Treatment choices include surgical excision, Mohs micrographic surgery (particularly for facial lesions), cryotherapy, topical medicines, or radiation therapy in a few selected patients. Early discovery of most BCCs results in effective treatment.
Using sunscreen, donning protective gear, and avoiding tanning beds help one to lower UV exposure. Particularly for those with a history of recurrent sunburns or extended sun exposure, regular skin examinations are absolutely vital.
