Common mental health disorders, including anxiety, are defined by too great worry, fear, or uneasiness that interferes with daily activities. Although some anxiety is a natural reaction to stress, persistent anxiety—usually occurring without a clear reason— can become debilitating. Among the common anxiety disorders are specific phobias, social anxiety, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Anxiety symptoms can be physical as well as mental. People may have restlessness, irritation, trouble focusing, rapid pulse, muscular strain, perspiration, and disrupted sleep. Unexpected episodes of severe anxiety in panic disorder can cause dyspepsia, vertigo, and chest pain.
Psychological, environmental, and hereditary elements all combine to produce anxiety. Stressful life events, trauma, drug misuse, and other mental health disorders can increase the risk. Anxiety can compromise relationships, performance at jobs, and general well-being without appropriate therapy.
Thankfully, anxiety is quite treatable. Common treatments include cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), drugs (including SSRIs), relaxation techniques, and lifestyle adjustments, including consistent exercise, meditation, and good sleeping habits. Recovering also depends much on the help of friends and relatives.
Early recognition of anxiety and expert assistance will significantly increase the quality of life and lessen the burden of the disorder.
