A respiratory disorder marked by infection and lung inflammation, especially in the alveoli, small air sacs where gas exchange takes place, called pneumonia. Infected, these sacs swell with pus or fluid, which makes breathing difficult and lowers oxygen intake. Although bacteria, viruses, or fungi can all cause pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia—especially Streptococcus pneumoniae—is the most often occurring type. Although it can strike anyone at any age, it most likely affects young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
Usually, symptoms are coughing with phlegm, chest discomfort, fever, chills, tiredness, and dyspnoea. Severe cases could cause low oxygen levels and disorientation. Diagnosis calls for a physical examination, chest X-rays, and laboratory tests taken together. The aetiology determines the treatment: antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia, antiviral treatments for viral types, and antifungal agents for fungal pneumonia.
Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding smoking, getting vaccinated—including the flu and pneumococcal vaccines—and receiving appropriate medical treatment for respiratory issues are important preventive measures. Most patients recover totally with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Delayed or poor treatment, however, might cause problems like respiratory failure or lung abscesses.
