Particularly in the muscles and surrounding fascia, myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a persistent musculoskeletal disorder marked by pain and inflammation in the soft tissues of the body. MPS is characterised by "trigger points"—tight bands of muscle fibres that are responsive to touch and can produce referred pain in apparently unrelated locations. Muscle overuse, injury, stress, or incorrect posture can all cause these trigger points.
Unlike other muscular aches, MPS causes discomfort that lasts over time and can affect everyday activities, sleep, and mental stability. Typical complaints include muscle weakness, stiffness, and intense agonising pain. In certain circumstances it can resemble other disorders like fibromyalgia, which complicates diagnosis.
Treatment typically combines physical therapy, trigger point injections, massage, dry needling, and painkillers. Additionally useful for controlling symptoms are stress-reducing methods and stretching exercises.
MPS can seriously affect quality of life if untreated, even though it is not fatal. Managing and reducing the suffering related to this sometimes misinterpreted ailment depends on knowing its causes and identifying the symptoms.
