A total hip replacement (THR), sometimes referred to as a total hip arthroplasty, is a surgical operation whereby prosthetic components replace worn-out or damaged hip joint components. Patients with severe arthritis, hip fractures, or diseases like osteonecrosis—which cause limited mobility and persistent hip pain—should especially consult it.
The injured femoral head is removed and replaced during the operation with a metal or ceramic ball fastened to a stem buried into the thigh bone. The hip socket is resurfaced and lined with a robust synthetic cup. This mix promotes seamless, pain-free joint mobility.
Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgical techniques, among other developments in surgical methods, have greatly enhanced results, shortened recuperation times, and minimised problems. Usually starting physiotherapy immediately after surgery to restore strength and flexibility, most patients resume walking with help within a day following surgery.
By restoring normal hip function and providing long-term pain relief, THR helps patients to resume daily activities, including walking, stair climbing, and even low-impact sports. Artificial hips will survive 15–25 years or more with appropriate care and activity changes. For many people, THR has changed their life by greatly enhancing mobility and general quality of living.
