Commonly referred to as high cholesterol, hyperlipidaemia is the condition whereby blood's lipids—fats—are raised, particularly cholesterol and triglycerides. Normal bodily operation depends on these fats, but when they build up too much, they can cause major medical problems, including stroke, heart attack, and atherosclerosis. Routine screenings are especially important for those with a family history, obesity, diabetes, or inactive lifestyle since hyperlipidaemia often develops silently without symptoms.
Main forms are primary (genetic) and secondary (lifestyle or disease-related). Common causes include a poor diet heavy in saturated and trans fats, lack of physical activity, smoking, too much alcohol, and diseases like diabetes or hypothyroidism.
Usually, treatment consists of medication along with lifestyle adjustments. Crucially, there are diet changes, including boosting fibre, cutting saturated fats, and supplementing omega-3 fatty acids. Regular physical exercise, weight control, and quitting smoking also play a significant role. Sometimes doctors provide prescriptions for statins or other lipid-lowering medications to help manage cholesterol levels.
Although managing hyperlipidaemia is a lifetime commitment, people can greatly lower their risk of cardiovascular disease and keep general health with the correct medical direction and lifestyle choices.
