Neurodevelopmental Disorders are
a set of problems that arise early in childhood that impact the development of
the brain, learning, communication, behaviour, emotions, or social
functioning. Their consequences can last throughout youth and adulthood,
impacting education, relationships, independence, and activities of
everyday life. These conditions may be a result of a combination of genetics,
biology and environmental factors.
Common examples of
neurodevelopmental disorders include Autism Spectrum Disorder,
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Intellectual Disability, Communication
Disorders, Specific Learning Disorders, and Motor Disorders. Every illness
is different, and symptoms might be minimal to substantial. Some children may
have difficulty with speech and language; some children may have difficulties
with attention, coordination, academic skills, social interaction or adaptive
functioning.
Early identification is
crucial, as it can help children achieve their potential by providing
appropriate support to improve developmental outcomes.
Developmental history,
behavioural observation, educational testing, psychiatric testing,
and speech or occupational therapy assessments may all be part of the
examination. Treatment is individualised and may involve behavioural treatment,
speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, educational
interventions, parent training, and medication where needed.
With ongoing supervision, supportive
surroundings and coordinated care, many individuals with neurodevelopmental
problems can learn useful skills and lead full, productive lives. Family
participation and understanding is another important part of long-term
improvement.
