Genetic Blood Disorders

Genetic blood disorders are inherited conditions caused by changes in genes that affect the production or function of blood cells, hemoglobin, bone marrow, or clotting proteins. These disorders are passed from parents to their children and may be present at birth, although symptoms can appear at different stages of life. Common examples include sickle cell disease, thalassemia, hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, hereditary spherocytosis, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.

The symptoms vary depending on the specific disorder but may include chronic anemia, excessive bleeding, frequent infections, fatigue, jaundice, bone pain, delayed growth, or an enlarged spleen. Diagnosis typically involves a detailed family history, complete blood count, blood smear, hemoglobin analysis, clotting studies, and genetic testing to identify the underlying mutation.

Options may include blood transfusions, iron chelation therapy, clotting factor replacement, medications, nutritional support, and bone marrow or stem cell transplantation in selected cases. Regular medical follow-up is essential to monitor complications and improve long-term health outcomes.
