Degenerative Valve Disease

Degenerative Valve Disease is a progressive heart condition in which one or more heart valves gradually lose their normal structure and function due to aging, calcium buildup, or long-term wear and tear. The aortic and mitral valves are most commonly affected, resulting in valve narrowing (stenosis), leakage (regurgitation), or both. As valve function declines, the heart must work harder to maintain adequate blood circulation throughout the body.

Common symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest discomfort, dizziness, palpitations, reduced exercise tolerance, and swelling in the legs or ankles. In the early stages, many individuals may not experience noticeable symptoms, making regular cardiac evaluations important, especially for older adults.
Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, echocardiography, electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray, and, when necessary, advanced imaging such as CT scans or cardiac catheterization. Treatment depends on disease severity and symptom progression. Mild cases may require routine monitoring and medications to manage associated conditions like high blood pressure or heart failure. Severe valve damage often requires minimally invasive valve repair or surgical valve replacement.
