Ischemic Cardiomyopathy

Ischemic Cardiomyopathy is a chronic heart condition in which the heart muscle becomes weakened due to prolonged inadequate blood supply, most commonly resulting from coronary artery disease or previous heart attacks. When the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen-rich blood, healthy tissue may be replaced with scar tissue, reducing the heart's ability to pump blood effectively. Over time, this can lead to an enlarged heart, decreased ejection fraction, and symptoms of heart failure.

Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling of the legs or ankles, chest discomfort, reduced exercise tolerance, and irregular heartbeats. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, stress testing, coronary angiography, cardiac MRI, and blood tests to evaluate heart function and identify blocked arteries.

Treatment focuses on improving blood flow, relieving symptoms, and preventing disease progression. Medications such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, diuretics, antiplatelet agents, and cholesterol-lowering drugs are commonly prescribed. In suitable patients, coronary angioplasty with stenting or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) may restore blood supply to the heart. Lifestyle modifications, including smoking cessation, a heart-healthy diet, regular physical activity, weight management, and control of diabetes and high blood pressure, play an essential role in long-term care. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can improve quality of life, reduce complications, and enhance overall survival.
