Primary Cardiac Tumors

Primary cardiac tumors are uncommon tumors that develop directly within the tissues of the heart rather than spreading from another part of the body. They may arise from the heart muscle, valves, connective tissue, or lining of the heart. Most primary cardiac tumors are benign, with atrial myxomas being the most frequently diagnosed type. Malignant forms, such as cardiac sarcomas, are much rarer but tend to grow rapidly and can spread to surrounding structures.

Patients may experience shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fainting, fatigue, or signs of heart failure. Some tumors obstruct blood flow or interfere with normal heart valve function, while others increase the risk of stroke by releasing small fragments into the bloodstream.

Diagnosis involves advanced imaging techniques such as echocardiography, cardiac MRI, CT scans, and occasionally tissue biopsy. Early identification is important because even benign tumors can cause serious complications if left untreated. Surgical removal is the preferred treatment for most primary cardiac tumors and often provides excellent outcomes for benign lesions. Malignant tumors may require a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted treatments. Regular follow-up helps detect recurrence and supports long-term heart health.
