Blunt Cardiac Trauma

Blunt cardiac trauma refers to injury of the heart resulting from a non-penetrating impact to the chest, most commonly caused by motor vehicle collisions, falls, sports injuries, or workplace accidents. The severity ranges from minor bruising of the heart muscle to life-threatening damage involving the heart chambers, valves, or major blood vessels. Cardiac contusion is the most frequent form of blunt cardiac injury.

Patients may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, low blood pressure, or fainting. In severe cases, the injury can lead to heart failure, cardiac rupture, or dangerous rhythm disturbances. Because symptoms may resemble other chest injuries, careful evaluation is essential.

Diagnosis typically includes a physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests for cardiac biomarkers such as troponin, echocardiography, and computed tomography (CT) scans when indicated. Continuous cardiac monitoring is often recommended to detect delayed arrhythmias or worsening heart function.

Treatment depends on the extent of the injury. Mild cases may require observation and supportive care, while severe injuries can necessitate intensive care, medications to stabilize heart rhythm and blood pressure, or emergency surgery. Early recognition, prompt medical management, and close follow-up significantly improve recovery and reduce the risk of long-term cardiovascular complications after blunt cardiac trauma.
