Combined Valve And Coronary Disease

Combined valve and coronary disease is a complex cardiovascular condition in which a patient has significant heart valve disease along with coronary artery disease. This combination can reduce the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently while also limiting oxygen supply to the heart muscle. The condition commonly affects older adults and individuals with long-standing cardiovascular risk factors.

Patients may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, palpitations, or swelling in the legs. Symptoms often worsen with physical activity and may indicate advanced heart disease. Common risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, aging, and a family history of cardiovascular disorders.

Diagnosis requires a comprehensive cardiac evaluation using echocardiography to assess valve function, coronary angiography or CT coronary angiography to identify arterial blockages, electrocardiography (ECG), and other imaging studies to evaluate heart performance. Treatment depends on disease severity and the patient's overall health. Medications may help control symptoms, but many patients benefit from combined coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and heart valve repair or replacement during a single surgical procedure. In selected cases, minimally invasive or transcatheter techniques may also be considered.
