Right Ventricular Failure

Right Ventricular Failure (RVF) occurs when the right side of the heart loses its ability to pump blood efficiently to the lungs. As a result, blood backs up in the veins, leading to fluid accumulation throughout the body. This condition commonly develops due to left-sided heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, chronic lung diseases, congenital heart defects, or damage from a heart attack affecting the right ventricle. Patients often experience swelling in the legs, ankles, and abdomen, fatigue, an enlarged liver, rapid weight gain from fluid retention, and shortness of breath during physical activity.

Diagnosis involves a thorough clinical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiography, chest X-rays, blood tests, and advanced imaging when necessary. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause while improving heart function and relieving symptoms. Diuretics help reduce excess fluid, while medications for pulmonary hypertension or heart failure may improve circulation. Oxygen therapy and lifestyle modifications, including reduced sodium intake and fluid management, are often recommended. In severe or advanced cases, mechanical circulatory support or heart transplantation may be considered.

Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to prevent complications such as kidney dysfunction, liver congestion, arrhythmias, and worsening heart failure.
