Mechanical Circulatory Support

Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) refers to specialized medical devices designed to help the heart pump blood when it cannot function effectively on its own. These devices are commonly used in patients with advanced heart failure, cardiogenic shock, or those awaiting heart transplantation. MCS can provide temporary or long-term support depending on the patient's condition and treatment goals.

Common forms of mechanical circulatory support include ventricular assist devices (VADs), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and total artificial hearts. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are the most frequently used long-term devices, helping the left ventricle deliver oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. Temporary devices are often employed during emergencies or after major cardiac surgery.

Mechanical circulatory support improves organ perfusion, reduces symptoms such as fatigue and breathlessness, and enhances overall quality of life. Careful patient selection, regular monitoring, and specialized follow-up are essential to minimize complications such as infection, bleeding, blood clots, or device malfunction.
