Graft Failure

Graft failure is a complication that occurs when a surgically implanted blood vessel graft no longer functions as intended. It is most commonly associated with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), where arteries or veins are used to restore blood flow to the heart. Failure may develop soon after surgery or years later due to blood clot formation, narrowing from scar tissue, progression of atherosclerosis, or technical issues related to the graft placement. Reduced blood flow through the graft can lead to chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, or, in severe cases, a heart attack.

Diagnosis typically involves electrocardiography, blood tests, stress imaging, coronary angiography, or CT coronary angiography to evaluate graft patency and heart function. Treatment depends on the severity and underlying cause. Medications such as antiplatelet agents, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and anticoagulants may help prevent further blockage. In some cases, percutaneous coronary intervention with balloon angioplasty and stent placement can restore blood flow. If multiple grafts fail or the blockage is extensive, repeat bypass surgery may be considered.

Long-term prevention focuses on controlling blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, avoiding smoking, maintaining a heart-healthy diet, exercising regularly, and adhering to prescribed medications. Consistent follow-up care helps preserve graft function and reduces the risk of future cardiovascular complications.
