Subclavian Artery Disease

Subclavian Artery Disease is a vascular condition in which one or both subclavian arteries become narrowed or blocked, reducing blood flow to the arms, neck, and, in some cases, the brain. The most common cause is atherosclerosis, although inflammatory diseases, congenital abnormalities, or previous radiation therapy may also contribute. Many individuals have no symptoms during the early stages, but progressive narrowing can lead to arm fatigue, pain during activity, numbness, weakness, coldness, or a noticeable difference in blood pressure between the arms. When blood flow to the brain is affected, dizziness, fainting, blurred vision, or balance problems may occur due to subclavian steal syndrome.

Diagnosis begins with a physical examination and comparison of blood pressure in both arms. Imaging studies such as Doppler ultrasound, CT angiography, MR angiography, or conventional angiography help identify the location and severity of arterial narrowing. Treatment depends on symptom severity and the extent of blockage. Lifestyle changes, including smoking cessation, healthy eating, regular exercise, and management of diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, are essential. Medications may reduce cardiovascular risk, while significant blockages can be treated with angioplasty and stenting or surgical bypass. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment improve circulation, relieve symptoms, and reduce the risk of stroke and limb complications.
