Bradyarrhythmias Requiring Pacemaker Surgery

Bradyarrhythmias are heart rhythm disorders in which the heart beats slower than normal, reducing its ability to pump enough blood throughout the body. Common causes include sinus node dysfunction, atrioventricular (AV) block, aging-related changes in the heart’s electrical system, and certain medical conditions or medications. Symptoms often include fatigue, dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, exercise intolerance, and confusion due to decreased blood flow to vital organs.

When bradyarrhythmias cause significant symptoms or pose a risk of serious complications, pacemaker surgery is the preferred treatment. A pacemaker is a small electronic device implanted beneath the skin near the collarbone. Thin insulated wires, called leads, are guided through veins into the heart, where they continuously monitor the heart’s rhythm. If the heart rate becomes too slow or pauses unexpectedly, the pacemaker delivers gentle electrical impulses to maintain a normal heartbeat.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation and usually requires only a short hospital stay. Most patients recover quickly and resume normal activities within a few weeks, following their physician’s recommendations.

Pacemaker implantation effectively relieves symptoms, prevents recurrent fainting episodes, improves exercise capacity, and enhances quality of life. Regular follow-up appointments ensure the device functions properly and the battery remains in optimal condition for many years.
