Fitness and body composition disorders refer to abnormal proportions of fat, muscle, bone, and hydration that negatively impact health and physical performance. The most common disorder is obesity, characterized by excessive fat mass that increases risks for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, respiratory problems like sleep apnea, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Sarcopenia involves severe loss of skeletal muscle mass, leading to frailty, reduced strength, and impaired mobility, especially in older adults. A newer condition, osteosarcopenic obesity, combines excess fat with low muscle and bone mass, often linked to chronic stress and hormone hypersecretion.

Low body fat, particularly in athletes, can impair immune function and cause bone loss in women due to reduced estrogen, increasing fracture risk. Metabolic syndrome clusters high blood pressure, elevated glucose, excess abdominal fat, and abnormal cholesterol, raising cardiovascular and diabetes risk.

Chronic stress contributes to these disorders by increasing fat accumulation, cellular dehydration, and systemic inflammation. Body composition assessment through skinfold measurement, bio-electrical impedance, or DXA scans helps identify imbalances.

Treatment involves targeted nutrition, resistance exercise to build muscle, weight management, and stress reduction. Monitoring body fat percentage alongside BMI provides accurate health insights, as two people with identical weight and height may have vastly different health risks due to composition differences.
