Childhood Iron Deficiency Anemia

Childhood iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common nutritional disorders affecting children worldwide. It develops when the body lacks sufficient iron to produce adequate hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. As a result, tissues and organs receive less oxygen, leading to various physical and developmental problems.

Infants, toddlers, and rapidly growing children are particularly vulnerable because their iron requirements are higher. Common causes include inadequate dietary iron intake, prolonged exclusive milk feeding without iron-rich complementary foods, poor absorption of iron, and blood loss due to intestinal parasites or other medical conditions. Premature infants are also at greater risk because they have lower iron stores at birth.

Symptoms may develop gradually and include fatigue, pale skin, weakness, irritability, poor appetite, delayed growth, reduced concentration, and decreased physical activity. In severe cases, iron deficiency can affect cognitive development, behavior, and immune function, making children more susceptible to infections.

Diagnosis is usually confirmed through blood tests that assess hemoglobin and iron levels. Treatment involves increasing dietary iron through foods such as lean meats, legumes, green leafy vegetables, and fortified cereals, along with iron supplements when recommended by a healthcare provider. Early detection and proper management help restore normal growth, energy levels, and overall health.
