Overtraining Syndrome

Overtraining Syndrome (OTS) is a chronic condition that develops when an athlete’s training intensity or frequency overwhelms the body’s ability to recover. Unlike normal training fatigue, OTS doesn’t resolve with one or two days of rest and actually reduces physical performance while harming mental well-being.

The syndrome stems from prolonged nonfunctional overreaching—intense practice and competition paired with insufficient recovery time. This disrupts biological, neurochemical, and hormonal regulation mechanisms. Additional risk factors include single-sport specialization, sudden training increases, endurance sports participation, low self-esteem, and pressure from coaches or parents.

Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, chronic muscle/joint pain, weight loss, increased resting heart rate, decreased athletic performance, prolonged recovery time, lack of enthusiasm, frequent illnesses, sleep disturbances, and mood changes such as irritability or anger. Athletes may also experience reduced coordination and difficulty completing usual routines.

Diagnosis relies on the athlete’s history, reported symptoms, and excluding alternative medical explanations—no specific laboratory test exists for OTS. The only effective treatment is rest, typically requiring four to 12 weeks of stopping training or competition. During rest, low-intensity aerobic exercise unrelated to the specific sport can maintain basic fitness.

Prevention involves flexible training regimens with planned one-to-two-day weekly breaks, longer breaks every few months, adequate nutrition, proper sleep, and making training fun with age-appropriate workouts.
