Binge eating disorder (BED) is
one of the most prevalent eating disorders. Recurrent episodes of eating large
quantities of food in a short period of time. There is a feeling of loss of
control over eating behavior. Binge eating episodes typically lead to
feelings of shame or guilt, setting them apart from other eating disorders.
People with BED may also gain weight and develop other health
problems over time.
Those with this condition
often eat quickly, eat when they are not hungry, and eat until they are
uncomfortably full. They are often coupled with feelings of shame,
humiliation, embarrassment, or emotional discomfort. Stress, worry, unhappiness,
and low self-esteem might play a role in the development and sustenance
of the condition.
Binge Eating Disorder can
occur in people of any age, gender, or body shape. If left untreated, it can
increase the chances of obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart
disease, digestive problems, and mental health problems.
The usual treatment is psychological counseling, food counseling, behavioral treatment, and help for underlying emotional disorders. One of the most effective approaches to working with disordered eating is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). It helps people to identify problematic eating patterns and develop healthy coping skills. Early and proper therapy can considerably improve the chances of recovery and quality of life.
