Infections and sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs) are health problems caused by bacteria,
viruses, fungi or parasites communicated from one person to another through
sexual intercourse, contaminated fluids, or intimate physical contact. These
disorders affect both men and women equally and can influence reproductive
organs, urinary health, fertility, and overall health and well-being. Sexually
transmitted diseases include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital
herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), and HIV. Poor sanitation
and lack of immunity may cause various illnesses. Untreated urinary tract
diseases can also cause certain infections.
Symptoms might vary
depending on the infection, but can include pain when urinating,
strange discharge, itching, ulcers, swelling, pain in the pelvic
area, fever, and skin rashes. But many STDs remain silent in early
stages, and the disease is transferred unknowingly. A medical examination and
laboratory testing are necessary to diagnose the disease early and prevent
possible long-term complications such as infertility, chronic pain,
damage to internal organs, or susceptibility to infection.
Treatment varies according
to the underlying cause and can involve antibiotics, antiviral
medications, antifungal therapy, or supportive care. Practising safe sex,
getting regular health check-ups, getting vaccinated, practising
excellent hygiene, and communicating openly with partners are all important to
curb the spread of illnesses and encourage sexual health for the long
term.
