Ganglion Cyst

Ganglion cysts are common soft tissue lumps that form around joints or tendons. They often develop on the back of the wrist, but they may also appear on the hand, foot, or ankle. These cysts contain a thick, jelly-like fluid and can vary in size from very small to about an inch or more.

Most ganglion cysts are harmless and may disappear on their own without treatment. In many cases, the main concern is appearance rather than health risk. However, if the cyst becomes large or presses on a nerve, it may cause pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness.

Treatment is usually not needed unless the cyst is painful or affects movement. Common options include rest, wrist support, needle drainage, or surgical removal in persistent cases. Doctors may advise watching the cyst if it is not causing problems, since recurrence can happen even after treatment. If a lump changes quickly, becomes very painful, or limits function, medical evaluation is important.
