Warts are a frequent skin
growth caused by infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV).
They are usually little, rough bumps and can form on different areas of the
body, for example, the hands, feet, knees and even the face. Warts are
usually harmless but can be passed from person to person or by touching contaminated
objects. They are particularly common in children and people with
compromised immune systems.
There are various forms of warts,
including common warts, plantar warts (on the soles of the feet), flat
warts and filiform warts. Each variety has different qualities, from
elevated grainy textures to flat, smooth patches. Most warts will
disappear on their own within months or years, but many people seek treatment
because of pain or cosmetic reasons.
Treatment may involve over-the-counter salicylic acid, cryotherapy (freezing), laser therapy or minor surgical removal. Taking precautions can lower your risk of becoming infected. Avoiding direct contact with warts , keeping your skin clean, and not sharing personal objects can help. Warts are usually harmless; however, they can be annoying. Most situations can be handled quite well with adequate care and patience.
