Dandruff

Dandruff is a common scalp problem that causes flakes of dead skin to shed from the scalp. These flakes may be white or yellowish. This condition is commonly caused by an overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast called Malassezia, which can irritate the scalp and speed up skin cell turnover. You often see apparent flakes on the scalp, hair, and shoulders, but there is also itching, dryness, redness, and even a sensitive scalp.

Dandruff may be caused by a variety of things, such as oily skin, dry scalps, stress, hormonal fluctuations, incorrect hair care, and sensitivity to specific hair products. Environmental changes, such as cold weather and pollution, may also increase symptoms. Dandruff isn’t harmful or communicable, but chronic occurrences can impact self-confidence and comfort.

The usual treatment of this condition is medicated anti-dandruff shampoos that contain Ketoconazole, Zinc Pyrithione, or Selenium Sulphide. These shampoos work by reducing the growth of fungus and scalp irritation. Good scalp hygiene, avoiding harsh chemicals, and using the right haircare products can help manage and prevent recurrences. If the dandruff does not clear up with therapy, it is best to see a Dermatologist to make sure there isn’t an underlying scalp problem such as Seborrhoeic Dermatitis or Psoriasis.
